First harvest of summer vegies!

We work on allotted garden to raise vegetables this year, too!
First we harvested basil, green pepper and tomato.  We planted cherry tomatoes, italian tomatoes and Momotaro or tomatoes, but Momotaro is still very green.  Egg plant is now blooming and we are looking forward to harvest them.

The First Harvest of Beans

One month after the first flower, we found big beans!  We were so delighted to harvest bigger ones.  Later, we found them a little thinner than ones on market, and it didn't taste as well either when we grilled and ate them.
Well, it was hasty of us to harvest.  We are looking forward to harvest again next week.

Mixed Leaves

We didn't go to our field for about a month because of the cold weather, muddy soil due to snowing, and dead beans.  But when we went there after a month, we found that dead beans are revived and mixed leaves are grown so much.  While I stayed at home, I hated to go back to the field, but as soon as I saw reviving greens, I  gained my drive.  I felt like growing as much vegies as possible this season!

Daikon Leaves

We harvested our last daikon, Japanese raddish, from our field. Usually, when we put a daikon in our room, its leaves get withered, but this time, they erected and looked fresh as time went. It was so strange and beautiful, I can't help taking their picture.

Cutting Root of Pulled Sprout

I was cutting sprout root tonight, drinking COLA SHOCK (I was shocked that I did't taste Wokka at all). Well, I can throw them away, but they taste good and seem to be so nutritious that I just can't.

What a raddish!

As soon as I cut fresh raddish from our field to make salad, it turned out as in the picture and I cried, "What the hell is this!?" I've never seen raddish like this, though we harvested a few ugly ones. We ended up eating only end part, and I was so disappointed...

First Harvest of Japanese Raddish

I already pulled a few raddish before that started to rotten because I wartered them unnecessarily. I pulled the biggest and strongest because I need one for oden, Japanese pot dish. It was so much better than I expected that I took a picture. It tasted good, too. I even boiled leaves and ate them all in miso soup and sautee. One good raddish made me perfectly satisfied!

We didn't fell broccoli because we were told that we can harvest bud afterwards, but first we just got a few buds to be in miso soup for green color. To our happy surprise, we can harvest more buds lately that they don't fit in a small tupperware. They taste as good as regular broccoli and I don't have to worry about worms after harvest, which makes me very satisfied.
Our fileld guide said, "As plants have strong power to survive, maybe worm ridden broccoli produce more buds than healthy ones." Hmm, plant world is more profound than it looks.

Fight against Worms

We harvested broccoli and our mentors told us to keep it because we can still enjoy buds that will come out one after another. But worms are all over and eat our broccoli as much as they want, so we feel like felling it completely. As we know boiled broccoli is delicious, we keep our worm-stricken broccoli and fight against worms!

Autumn Field

We started to harvest peanuts planted in spring. After careful ly washed and boiled about 30 min, husked peanuts are one of the best snacks to accompany alcohol.

Fast growing chinese cabbage under a fly screen mesh. I hope they will curl to become a regular cabbage so that we can enjoy nabe (Japanese style hot pot dish) with home-grown chinese cabbage.

Japanese radish right before thinning out. Thinned radish is also very delicious.

We felled goya, bitter gourd, in tears...
As it still had quite a few fruits, I hoped to keep it as long as possible, but we have to prepare and start for winter vegitables now. When I felled goya, I harvested 31 baby goyas. They tasted good when I fryed them as goya chips. Even if they are so small, they turn to yellow when they are left for two days. So I put some in fried rice for breakfast. I even suggested to put some in miso soup with deep fryed tofu, but my family make an objection.

We attended an award presentation ceremony at Osawa community hall. Our field is awarded with Furusato Center Award in the agricultural field contest. What a surprise! Our filed is one of the wildest and spinatch looked like Annual fleabane. I guess they awarded us to cheer us, "don't give up, please keep trying for another year!"

I had a good crop of grape tomato, green pepper and Japanese basil again. Today's emphasis, however, must be on goya, which are the first crop. In order to get better crop from now on, they are rather small, but I have the greatest fondness for them.

When I glanced at peanut that I hadn't looked for weeks because we'd been too busy with harvesting and pruning of tomatos and eggplant, I found many flowers. Their shape is like that of day flower and yellow color is so refreshing.

We laid a net for fast-growing Goya, or bitter gourd, and drew its vines to the net this morning. However, it's my husband's job while I pulled weeds like Trojan. It's painful, but I can go on becasue in the end, we can get harvest as in the left picture whenever we go to the field.

We harvested greenpepper and eggplant this morning, and we ate them with chilled white wine in the ende of the day. I just love this happy moment.

Gash, my spinach has flowers and grows like wild weed. Though we can harvest leaves and eat them as usual, one harvest in a week is not just frequent enough to catch up with its growth, which is an obvious failure due to lack of planning. However, green peppers and egg plants have their first fruit and grows very well.

Mixed leaves are now ripe. As we see in the picture; however, worms have eaten them as much as they want because we didn't do anything to prevent them. I felt sick when I saw them, but when I washed clean and sauteed them, they tasted much better than what are sold at supermarket. It might be a good idea to eat worm-eaten leaves, feeling we eat worm's leftover leaves becuase we can be humble.

The picture below shows peanut sprout. We put an upper part of plastic bottle to prevent birds from eating peanut seeds. Sprout looks so cute!
We found first tomato fruit. I couldn't help thinking, "will we be able to get harvest about the week after next?"

Tomato that we planted last week bloomed! Well, it's only natural because we followed a direction in our textbook that we should buy seedlings with flower buds. But still, it's nice to see them blooming.
